From the gym
to the springboard.

How useful are gym-based strength and power measurements for understanding a diver’s hurdle?

An exploratory single-athlete study combining trap-bar testing, muscle-activation recordings and video analysis.

Reading the hurdle recording

The traces show RMS voltage over time; a higher trace is not automatically evidence of a stronger or better-performing muscle. Movement phases are not labelled because alignment with the video has not been confirmed.

What I could tell a coach

Read gym measurements alongside the athlete’s actual hurdle. The recordings identify periods to examine more closely with synchronised video and repeated trials.

What I could not conclude

This single-athlete study does not establish an optimal training load, predict dive quality or demonstrate that improving gym power improves a dive.

The approach

Seven loaded trap-bar trials were combined with surface EMG and high-speed video. Kinovea displacement and time data were taken into Excel to calculate velocity and acceleration. Three dryland hurdle trials were collected; the second was selected for data clarity.

The observations

Recorded gym velocity decreased as load increased. The highest reported power was approximately 400 W at 80 kg. The hurdle EMG trace showed bursts of activation over time. These were descriptive observations from one athlete.

The coaching question

The work encouraged me to interpret a gym profile alongside the sport-specific movement. It did not establish that gym power predicts hurdle performance or that a particular training intervention improves a dive.

What comes next

More athletes, repeated trials and testing in normal diving conditions would help investigate transfer. Consistent force and power calculations and clearly aligned video and EMG events would strengthen the comparison.

From coaching to a product

I founded, designed, developed and launched SkillSkope, bringing practical coaching experience into the design of a video-analysis tool.

My contribution

Product design, interface development, debugging, testing and iteration using Swift, SwiftUI and Apple’s video and computer-vision frameworks. AI-assisted development supported the build process.

Building a dependable workflow

During development, timeline markers became associated with the wrong video in side-by-side comparison. I investigated the data flow, corrected the marker-association logic and tested the behaviour.

Continuing development

Development continues around practical video-review and comparison workflows, shaped by my experience of reviewing technique with athletes.
